The White House News Conference as a Channel of Communication
The author is Director of the School of Journalism at Ohio State University
It is both a function and a primary responsibility of democratic government to keep the body politic informed. By tradition this is particularly true of the United States, but it requires constant vigilance and continual effort on the part of responsible government and the major communications media to obtain and to disseminate information about what that government does. In this article the author traces the history of the White House news conference, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this method of keeping the public informed, and suggests a method for enhancing conference effectiveness.
