Research for Psychological Warfare

JOHN W. RILEY, JR and LEONARD S. COTTRELL, JR.

Both authors are "old hands" at psychological warfare and are well known to Quarterly readers for their numerous publications in the field of social research. John W. Riley, Jr., is Chairman of the Sociology Department at Rutgers University, and Leonard S. Cottrell, Jr., is with the Russell Sage Foundation

While past research in psychological warfare has not led to a theory of communication, it makes possible the formulation of several rather firm propositions about target audiences, message content, and message effect. It also suggests some specific avenues of researth which might prove rewarding
