The Contributions of Opinion Research to the Evaluation of Psychological Warfare
Both the authors are currently associated with the Division of Radio Program Evaluation, Office of International Broadcasting Department of State
Effective psychological warfare requires constant proof of its own results. This need presents opinion research with a challenge, an opportunity. and many difficult problems.
The authors here describe the substantial contributions which opinion research has made to the evaluation of American international broadcasting. They find, however, that opinion research has not yet fully overcome such difficulties as precisely relating content and effect or fully evaluating broadcasts directed to populations which are inaccessible to systematic study.
An earlier version of this paper was presented before the American Association for Public Opinion Research in June, 1951.
